The Five Companions was WAY better than the disapointing and misleading The Four Doctors from last year’s subscriber bonus, and every companion has their little moment in the spotlight while working together with Five. It’s set around The Five Doctors, just as Five uses the Master’s transmat device, which makes this a nice extention of the episode canon itself (what with all the companion appearances in that special too).
Eddie Robson (writer of this story, and one of my fave Eighth Doctor audios - Memory Lane) writes a fast paced story with very short and sweet little snippets of dialogue between the Doctor and the companions, forming a forgotten bond that One’s companions now share with Five.
Possibly the best scenes were with Five and Polly - mainly where Polly reminices on how she felt that she wasn’t useful as she thought she was in the TARDIS, but Five actually tells her that she was the inspiration for him to keep fighting evil in the universe - as she had a distinct sense of right and wrong (possiblty referenced in The Moonbase).
That, and Polly killing a Sontaran with a stiletto heel. BADASS RIGHT THERE.
ALSO, IAN/BARBRA IS OFFICIALLY CANON. IT’S OBVIOUSLY HINTED BY IAN THAT THEY ARE MARRIED. <3
(I haven’t seen Sara Kingdom’s episodes yet, nor have I listened to her Companion Chronicles, which made me a little confused on how she’s alive in this story BUT…I’ll get on that eventually.)
